CLEWISTON — For the first time in history, Clewiston High School has started a robotics club, The Silver Warriors! This club is for scholars who are interested in studying STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) and helping scholars who are interested in STEM gain real-life experience in the field. Your robotics team at CHS is participating in an international competition called the FIRST Robotics Competition. FIRST (which derives from “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”) is the world’s leading child-serving nonprofit advancing the STEM subjects. Founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989, FIRST has evolved into a global movement by engaging millions of people with a proven game-changer for preparing kids to solve the world’s greatest problems. FIRST programs inspire innovation and leadership through engaging, hands-on robotics challenges developed to ignite curiosity and passion in students in grades K-12.

Go to to learn more about it. The FIRST Robotics Competition starts on Jan. 5, with a kickoff event at Suncoast Technical High School in Riviera Beach. The kickoff event will tell the teams about this year’s competitive field game. The team will have six weeks to design, build, program and test a robot that will compete in the South Florida Regional held in West Palm Beach. At the regional event, the team will work with and against other schools in order to advance in the competition. The Silver Warriors have been working on programming skills, looking at previous years’ competitions for design ideas, applying for grants and marketing the team for potential sponsorships. They have been successful at receiving the NASA Program Growth Grant ($6,000) and sponsorship from U.S. Sugar, Johnson-Prewitt Associates Inc., Karl E. Larsen, First Bank and Sunshine Family Medicine. Be on the lookout for great things to come from The Silver Warriors at Clewiston High School!
